February 6, 2025

The BME Institute and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) announce the launch of the Master in Financial Engineering & Innovation (MEFI), a pioneering programme designed to train professionals with quantitative profiles in the financial sector.

This master's degree, lasting 16 months and 90 ECTS credits, is aimed at graduates in STEM disciplines, including engineering, mathematics, and physics. The programme will be taught in English and has a tuition fee of 15,000 euros. Classes will be held both at the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers and at the emblematic Madrid Stock Exchange Palace, where BME's training centre has its classrooms, offering students an immersive educational experience in the heart of the financial sector.

The MEFI curriculum is structured in modules that cover fundamental tools of the financial sector and markets, through quantitative finance, to financial innovation and technology. Additionally, the programme includes a final module that involves business internships and the preparation of a master's thesis based on an applied financial project.

The faculty is composed of distinguished professors and researchers from UPM, as well as prestigious professionals from the financial world, ensuring training that combines academic rigour with practical experience.

One of the distinctive features of the MEFI is its focus on innovation and technological disruption in the financial sector. During one term, leading companies in the Fintech field will participate in the programme, providing students with the opportunity to develop and present innovative business cases, thus enhancing their future employability.

The programme also offers exclusive access to SIX-BME financial information systems, providing students with advanced tools for their training. Additionally, there is collaboration with sponsoring companies that will offer six-month internships, which can culminate in the Applied Finance Project (Master's Thesis).

With a capacity to accommodate up to 30 students per year, the MEFI seeks to meet the growing demand for professionals with quantitative training and a solid financial foundation in the sector.

Enrique Castellanos, director of the BME Institute, explains that “financial institutions increasingly require engineers and STEM graduates with adequate financial preparation, and this master's degree focuses on meeting that need, facilitating the labour market insertion of its graduates in areas such as investment banking, asset management, private equity, venture capital, and fintech."
