Energy efficiency

BME promotes different measures to reduce its electricity consumption and the emissions arising from its activities, mainly from its lighting, air conditioning/heating and IT systems. Of particular significance are the night-time and smart low consumption lighting systems, the replacement of air conditioning/heating systems or maintenance activities and the replacement of the IT equipment with other more energy-efficient equipment that has energy efficiency guarantees, such as the Energy Star certification and tools that improve the energy efficiency of its equipment.

Materializing its commitment to responsible environmental management, over the course of 2022 BME has implemented several initiatives to reduce its energy consumption and GHG emissions both proactively and as part of SIX's sustainability strategy:

• Commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in its activities before 2050.
• Acquisition of electricity from renewable sources in the Madrid offices (Las Rozas and Lealtad) and Bilbao.
• Replacement of primary air conditioners with high-efficiency ones that improve environmental quality in the offices.
• Temperature optimization in data processing centers and offices.
• Adjustment of office lighting schedules.
• BME also ensures that all its service providers with the greatest environmental impact have the relevant environmental management and/or energy efficiency certifications (e.g., facility maintenance services or office equipment suppliers).
